We see hygiene engineering in the field of drinking water and process water plants and air conditioning systems as a challenge

Drinking water

Nowadays, it is not just enough to run or own a plant; it also involves a certain amount of responsibility and obligations. On the one hand, ensuring that no damage to health can occur; on the other hand, minimising costs and maximising operating reliability. This can naturally only be achieved to a certain degree, but we can help you in advisory discussions on processing regular drinking water analyses (according to the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety [BMU] recommendation and German drinking water ordinance TrinkwV2011) on your properties as well as making recommendations on technical measures to be taken when values in the analysis exceed those allowed. An inspection at a local level will certainly be mandatory in order to take note of the conditions there and for the preparation of a sampling plan. This meeting should also be used to determine weak points or defects and report these. The general concern here is with chemical substances such as heavy metals and microbiological infestations such as legionella, other bacteria, yeasts and fungi. There are maximum allowable limits for all of these and you as plant operator/owner can be made liable for this situation. We are an independent, accredited company with an approved laboratory that is authorised to carry out the appropriate approaches and analyses. At the same time, we are trained to DVGW, DFLW and VDI (German association for gas and water, German Association for Air and Water Hygiene, German Association of Engineers) standards and approved for taking the relevant samples and analysing these. We can be active on your behalf for plants that have exceeded several limits or even visually demonstrate weaknesses that demand immediate action in the area of cleaning and disinfection, in compliance with VDI 6023. Our staff, tools and materials stand ready and are prepared for this. Our activities are the cleaning of tanks, piping, distributors and heaters for drinking water, and of water treatment plants.

  

Process water

Limescale and salt deposits are breeding grounds for germs and biofilm. They impair the functioning of plant components (e.g. nozzles, demisters) and steam generators or hot/cold heat transfer. Soft, germ-free make-up feedwater and the use of biocides protect the plant components in such cases. The process principle employed of replacing scale-building calcium/magnesium ions by sodium ions is the simplest and safest. 

However, softened or deionised water is corrosive and attacks (mainly) steel and non-ferrous metal alloys. The addition of inhibitors for appropriate mixtures of materials is important in preventing corrosion. Inhibitors are retardant substances that impede corrosion forming in the microstructure of the material.

 

Air conditioning plants

Hygiene in air conditioning plants is important for the overall plant structure as the sphere of influence would suffer if we imagine ourselves in a refrigeration room where food is stored or where staff are present in the sphere of influence of incoming air. The regulation VDI 6022 is applied here and reliance is placed on trained staff.
